The store Au Bon Marché was founded in 1838 by the brothers Paul and Justin Videau in the form of a large notions store (twelve employees and four departments) selling sheets as well as mattresses or umbrellas. In 1852, the two brothers form a partnership with Aristide and Marguerite Boucicaut who launch into the revamp of the store, developing then the concept of department store.
