Indeed, the trunk was prepared by the house staff, to fill the personal effects of Mr. or Mrs.. Then the carrier (called courier, at the time) came to pick up the trunks (around fifty for a couple with two children ...) at home to deliver them to the resorts.
It represents the colors of the family crest. This use allows carriers to easily group together trunks from the same family.
The stencil monogram corresponds to a period when the craftsman painted, with a stencil, on the brown canvas.

"Handmade" of the time
The monogrammed canvas began with woven canvas, then stenciled, to be created today in screen printing.
Indeed, the Paris store, Champs Elysées appears (created in 1914) and but also that of Cannes (1914).
