The pieces of baggage with saurian or reptile skin coating have always been very successful.
They require, for their manufacture, a specific skill, their leather being rather particular.
Crocodile leather vintage baggage is always refined.
Caution: When purchasing a crocodile leather baggage, make sure you will have no border to cross.
Indeed, the Washington convention on the protection of species very precisely regulates things and, nowadays, a crocodile leather bag must have a certificate to attest to the skin’s provenance. Without that certificate, your piece of baggage will be destroyed. It happened to the best ones.
How beautiful the lineage of the camphor tree!
It is a tree from the Lauraceae family, just like the laurels (laurus) that we know in this country.
Dreaming of baggage… wide-awake
Surprisingly, this beautiful picture, which was not taken here, shows a set of baggage available at Reve de Bagage…
LV wardrobe trunk, cabin trunk in orange Vuitonitte, hat trunk, hat box, leather scroll case…
Gucci ordered this wardrobe trunk with a crocodile leather coating.
It is certainly a hard work…
However, in my opinion, we can regret the "cheap" corners that are unsuited to the size of the trunk and the quality of its coating.
.
A salvage lock totally improbable, given the dimensions of the item.
That is a superb test… but jewelry is an essential part of a beautiful trunk.
The Moynat « toilet bags » catalog…
A wellspring of information where we learn that the toilet bags contained ear cleaners and hangnails scissors.
This little trunk, called Flower Trunk, has a very special story.
It was offered to Vuitton women clients on their child’s birth.
With a zinc covered interior, it could contain flowers…
The trunk was, according to the desire of the customer, turned into a cigarette box or jewelry box.

Louis Vuitton trunk - Before - After (French customer)
A unique trunk… It is inevitably rare… It is inevitably exceptional!
On the occasion of a Word Fair, Moynat made this leather trunk, sort of leather marquetry… a mix of art deco and oriental art.
That leather trunk is a real work of mastery, of know-how.
A return to the beginning of the 20th century, that is what this photo inspires, isn't it ?
Large-sized locks, protection of the reinforcing slats, reinforced edges... no doubt, this picture has been taken in the USA.
As can be seen on this picture, there is an impressive number of workers.
I think that nowadays, it would represent the whole profession!
Following the example of his colleague, Moynat has developed different types of canvasses.
Brown damier canvas, red damier (not photographed), plain orange or brown canvas, and finally the “M” monogrammed canvasses.
Our workshops have the advantage of being vast.
They are divided into several parts, including a 50m² room which is the cabinetmaking place.
The trunks of the counter come from our website La Malle en coin.
A lovely decoration idea and we dream of building a wall in the same way in the library of a castle.

The association paid a visit to the Speyer museum.
I could not help but take a photo…
We have had the visit of a Parisian customer who came to pick a large flat-top American trunk (100X50X55) and we were very surprised while helping him to load!!! A SMART car! ...
Well, it did fit in the car!
And here is the ancestral method that enables to place a nail on a trunk, in a perfectly solid way.
We remind you that a trunk is always built without any screw!
This is the Grail for any Vuitton collector: a trunk-bed is very rare and not easy to find…
For 10 years, the Musée du Bagage has been presenting one... a unique piece from 1868.
Well, we just found a second one!!
To the amateurs interested, we will put on sale a trunk-bed in 2012…
There will be one and only one…
The museum has two of them (one is for sale); the harp trunks are the largest trunks available on the market.
For example, when converted into a closet, they enable to store more than 3’000 CDs / DVDs.
This one will be auctioned during a sale of musical instruments.
Here are the photos of a Louis Vuitton steamer trunk, taken out of his attic by one of our customers.
The trunk is whitish, dirty. The brass hardware is oxidized.
The main challenge, in that case, is to treat that special canvas, used by Vuitton in the end of the 19th century.
The monogram is drawn by the weave of the canvas.
Cleaning can begin
"Trunk-makers speak to trunk-makers"
- the clasp is not handsome
- the lozine is clearing off
- the lock is not safe
- the binding is not proud
- the wardrobe challenges me

To organize a joyful mess, there is nothing like a television crew coming to shoot a program with comedians in the Musée du Bagage.
1 director, 1 script-girl, 1 makeup artist, 3 grips, 2 cameramen, 1 sound engineer, 1 assistant director, actors, 2 presenters,
Add cables, wires, spotlights, crates…
Shake it all… and there it is… It is a joyful mess for 2 days.
It's not every day that we find such a lot of trunks…
Photo before restoration
There are some hazy mornings when, on opening our email box, we believe we are not sufficiently awake to believe what we see…
Thus, one morning, we received the below photos.
I examined them well and I thought that, for "parts", in a cannibalizing process, it could be useful.
The diagnosis is simple:
- The lid of that wardrobe trunk has vanished (canvas and wood)
- One of the bottom slats is totally "rotten"
- Lozine is destroyed
The trunk has all its pieces.
But when we brought back that trunk to the workshop, we said to ourselves that the challenge of restoring it would be really interesting, to test ourselves.
They are the restoration steps of that trunk that I propose to describe.
Few workshops agree to show their "methods"… On the contrary I think that the description of the work will enable many amateurs to think it over before embarking on this type of works. But that will also encourage you not to discard partially destroyed parts.
Customer Photos:
Here is a beautiful Louis Vuitton women hat trunk.
It is a monogrammed version, with lozine bindings, leather handles, and brass hardware.
Our client bought it abroad on a public auction.
She brought it to us for restoration.
I propose here to see the result, after:
- cleaning the brass hardware
- cleaning the canvas
- mending the scratches
We are often asked for more tips about restoring... and the first tip that we reveal to you, for that Vuitton restoration, is that we have used NO product to clean the brass hardware. Everything is handmade. Ban "Miror" and other miracle pastes.
Once the restoration is finished, we will use however on the metal parts, a special wax, based on petroleum, to ensure preservation, limit contact with air and thus avoid oxidation.
We still have work, but the trunk already looks better… does not it?
The rest when the trunk will be totally restored.
It is an uncommon occurrence given that it is the first time that Goyard communicates via video.

In Oklahoma City, a trunk, that had been sealed for 100 years, has been opened and has revealed some incredibly preserved treasures. It is the whole outfit of the time that was discovered: magazines, suits, shoes, everyday objects…

Want to keep updated on the Musée du baggage news?
The Museum of the Great War chose La Malle en coin to provide decoration baggage.
Temporary exhibition dedicated to the painter Josso.
Nowadays the sleeping beauties are only seldom used for traveling.
The Louis Vuitton beautiful trunks are rather used for décoration .
Hereunder is a list of ideas that we have found or created with customers:
- Pile of suitcases 80, 70 , 60 and 50 cm in the entry
By forming a kind of perfect totem, it evokes the departure in the Orient-Express. :-)
- 100cm Steamer trunk or 100cm cabin trunk used as a coffee table in a nice lounge
- Steamer trunk at the bed end to store the blankets for winter
But some customers have other ideas, like these Wardrobe trunks
used in a bathroom to store/display bathrobes, towels, soap and other bathroom accessories.
Many are those who use small trunks as laundry basket, lingerie trunk or chest for secrets…
Trunks can also be found as valets in bedrooms or as extra seats.
Some use them as stand to put a nice lamp in a corridor, or as bedside table.
Sometimes we create a custom-made plinth to display them, or else, like at that man from Luxembourg’s home, we make a glass cube that totally protects the trunk.
Thus displayed in a case, it becomes a kind of objet d’art within everyone’s sight but out of reach for hands.
Several years ago, someone from a major luxury brand, looking at the photos of a restoration work, had said to me:
“It’s super, but, as I have no photos showing the previous condition, I cannot make out enough the work that has been done”.
That had given me an idea that we have just carried out.
The canvas of the trunk is the original. It has only been fixed and some little parts have been replaced.
All the parts of the trunk are original. Only restoration has been done (lock excepted, see below).
The stables strips have been painted only to delimit the two areas.
The missing lock has been replaced by a cast brass one that we have made according to the sand casting process
.
Then it has been treated, polished, assembled piece by piece and riveted again as it was originally.
It is functional without mechanism. Of course it bears no logo, as it is not original.
Reminder: Should we allow ourselves to affix a LV logo, we would be making counterfeit.
Obviously enough that item is not for sale, but only meant to show our ability for refurbishing.
It will be exhibited under glass in the Musée du Bagage.
Loïc, aged 16, came to work in our workshops last summer.
A true experience for him and for us!
The bellow photo is very informative…
Loïc, aged 16, finishes cleaning a Nuremberg trunk from the 17th century i.e. aged more than 350!
Generations follow one another and that type of timeless object remains…
We found that trunk in Berlin…
Under its layer of dust, nobody had noticed the monogram on both sides; we ourselves thought we had bought a mere large-sized leather steamer trunk. That was already a very good thing.
When the trunk was delivered by the trucker, while unpacking we had glimpsed the logo.
After restoring, we did some research to try to know who the previous owner was.
It was the Grand Duke Kirill of Russia.
To sum up:
Cyrille Vladimirovitch of Russia (in Russian : Кирилл Владимирович Романов, born 12 October 1876 in Tsarskoïe Selo, died 12 October 1938 in Neuilly-sur-Seine
Was Grand Duke of Russia
Member of the house of Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov
Rear-Admiral in the Imperial Navy of Russia
Head of the Imperial Family of Russia from 1924 to 1938 (pretender to the throne)

Building a trunk is not impossible for those who have time, the needed spare parts and a minimum of manual dexterity.

I found it necessary to write this post, following some recent events…
The first one is an email received from someone asking me to restore a trunk identical to the one above… The person describes the trunk as “antique”.
Yet it is a trunk found NEW in “consignment” shops for about 50 euros…
Therefore I did some research to find where it comes from, how much it costs…
That type of trunk can be found for $ 5… Yes indeed, you read right… $ 5, for an order of 100 pcs in China.
We bought one as a sample a few months ago.
The wood is in fact compressed sawdust which weighs 2 tons; leather is PVC, bindings are glued, etc. etc.
This trunk is sold in China $ 40 i.e. around 30 euros (1’000 pcs).
In a M… du Monde shop, it is offered at around 400 euros…
The trunk is described as leather-made (composition leather out of leather powder), as equipped with a lock (yes but it is one-piece with no mechanism), with nails (yes but the nails are only glued nailheads!!).
Trunk sold in China for $ 50 for an order of 100 pcs
Found here on a flea market offered by a junk dealer as being restored by him!!!
Then below, sets of different trunks, always sold by set of 3 pcs, for about $ 5 each for an order of 100 sets.
These trunks are presently offered on the flea markets in Switzerland for around CHF 150 per piece!
To cut a long story short, I beg you… Buy nothing if necessary… but do not buy that…
Leather suitcases, cartridge box, leather expandable suitcase, leather scroll case, etc.

You will find vulcanized fiber on the bindings of trunks made by Vuitton (lozine), Goyard and Moynat; but also as main coating on the American wardrobe trunks and such called “cardboard suitcases” that are actually fiber suitcases.
When Mr. de Brazza was leaving for Congo to fulfil the mission during which he was to die, had he foreseen that he would have to collect over there and bring back serious documents? The fact remains that he had asked the well-known trunk-maker Mr. Louis Witton a “secretaire trunk”, fitted out specially to keep against any attack or indiscretion the documents that would be entrusted to him. The ingenious manufacturer had made a piece of furniture very practical and at the same time completely impregnable.
